DESCENDANTS OF FRANCOIS SAVOIE

First Generation

1. Francois SAVOIE was born about 1621 in Poitou Province, France.. (Or he was born in Turin, Italy)

The following is a theory. Others believe Francois was born in France, not descending from this Noble family.

From: Family Sheet Source: Columbia Encyclopedia 1935 & Grolier Enc. 1992.

In 1637, Victor Amdaeus I, duke of the House of Savoy, died at age fifty, passing the House of Savoy on to his eldest son, Francois Hyacinthus I. Francois was only five years old at the time and his mother, Christine de France (sister of Louis XIII, king of France) ruled in his place. Francois died at the age of six and the dukedom was passed on to his younger brother Charles Emmanuel II, who was only four at the time. His uncle (the brother of his father), Prince Thomas of Carignano (1596-1656), challenged her authority, with the result of civil war between the two branches of the family from 1639 to 1642. Francois inherited the title of Prince of Carignane from his father.

When the war ended, Prince Thomas Francis's eldest son and next in line of succession left Italy and traveled to France to join a group of Norman families who were on their way by ship to settle the newly founded country of Acadia, New France (Nova Scotia). He was 22 years old when he joined the group. He was appointed group leader and served until the arrival at Port Royal, where he remained, settled, and married Catherine Lejeune.

*Francois was of Royal Blood from the House of Savoy. He left his Royal Home and family and went to the Vienne Area of France and joined a group setting out for Acadia." See Savoy Biblography.

It is believed by some researchers that Francois was the first in line as the oldest son to rule Savoy-Carignano. He may have had a title of Prince. It is suspected he did because his two brothers were princes. He may have fought against the King of France and was banished, explaining why he would have left home. The whole Empire of Savoy was ruined after the 30 years war ended in 1648. It didn't end in Savoy until 1658. From Italy Francois made his way to the "new world" at Port-Royal.

THE ABOVE INFORMATION HAS NOT BEEN DOCUMENTED. However, it was a family story handed down generation by generation, (in the family of author LOUIS GERMAIN SAVOY (which doesn't necessarily make it true).

At the time of the Acadian expulsion in 1755, the large numbers of SAVOIE households in Acadia traced their ancestry to a common progenitor: Francois Savoie.

Although after the 1755 expulsion, most of his descendants were exiled to various points along the Atlantic seaboard of British North America, at least six of his great-grandsons found their way to Louisiana, probably arriving in 1765 with a shipload of Acadian refugees from Halifax. All six first settled along the Mississippi River in St. James parish. Few of the original SAVOIE’s remained in St. James, most migrating to either Opelousa or the Attakapas area.

Soon after coming to Louisiana, the youngest of the six brothers, Pierre and Jean dit Valois, moved to the Opelousas’s prairies to engage in raising stock. Jean married in 1773 Marguerite Bordelon settling in the Grand Coteau and Carencro areas. Along with other members of the clan, Jean made the area one of the main Savoie strongholds of the state. He immigrated about 1643 to Port-Royal, Acadia.

He appeared in the census in 1671 in Acadia. Laboureur - FRANCOIS SCAVOIS aagé de 50 ans, sa femme Catherine Le Jeune aagée de 38 ans. 1. You have a little more info on Francois than I do. I have wondered if the "Shroud of Turin" was once family property. Haha. I went to the Pantheon in Rome a few years ago, and they have a live guard standing by the tomb of the last King of Italy, a Savoie. There was a time when the Savoies were not allowed in Italy. It would be interesting if we could verify Francois' royal linage. -- Jason Savoie (son of Walter Bernard Savoie, son of Walter John, son of John Francis, ... son of Francois Savoie)
